The Motte consisted of a (wooden) keep that was protected by palisades and constructed on top of an artificially created hill while the Bailey was the center of economic activity. WebRochester Castle was originally constructed by Gundulf, Bishop of Rochester, in the 1080s. It is one of the earliest Norman stone keeps to be built in England following the Norman Conquest of 1066. In 1127, Henry I instructed Archbishop of Canterbury, William de Corbeil, to build a great stone keep.
