WebThrough our retrospective cohort study we found that an EGD before the blind passage of a TEE probe in patients with active upper GI symptoms or known esophageal diseases is warranted and it does indeed change patient management. On the basis of endoscopic findings, 20 patients (15%) in our study were not cleared for TEE. WebEGD revealed the presence of a previously unknown Zenker’s diverticulum, which required surgical correction. Many retrospective case series studies, including ours, may underestimate the true incidence of TEE-associated complications.
