Web14 okt. 2008 · I don't think this changes to past perfect. It doesn't sound right to me. I think it's because "we left" isn't actually a past event at the time of speech. It's not like: I said: "Oh no, I've knocked over a vase." I told Oswald that I had knocked over a vase. Where you would use the past perfect. In the topic text, we haven't actually "left".
